To ensure that our work is effective, we rely on community leadership. All of our projects are planned and implemented in consultation with our community partners, and volunteers work with these partner organizations to help them achieve these goals. Throughout the year we provide financial and logistical support to their initiatives.
The SOS children’s village in Gulu provides a safe and loving home for children orphaned and affected by HIV/AIDS and war. Through their family strengthening program, they aim to support families in financial difficulty to ensure that they can care for their children. CVAP provides support to the S.O.S family strengthening programs through the provision of live stock to identified families, home repairs, and support for scholarship initiatives and the construction of a library.
The SOM organization in Gulu aims to support and empower the community of Gulu through education, employment and health care. At their community center they provide daycare, agricultural training, scholarships, medical treatment, revolving loans, counseling, and a caring community. CVAP supports these efforts primarily by providing financial assistance for their revolving loan program.
The St. Jude Children’s Home provides a safe haven for children who have been abandoned or orphaned, or have disabilities. Over 145 children are cared for at St. Jude, where they are provided with education (through the onsite school), health care, and a secure and loving environment. Currently CVAP supports the St. Jude Children’s Home Health Project by providing human resources and material donations and has recently attained an onsite nurse and clinic for the center.
Each year, volunteers organize events to promote community and educate the public about health issues. Our annual Sports Gala brings together a variety of community partners to educate youth about health related issues while promoting positive empowerment and community through sports. Past Sports Gala’s have focused on malaria and HIV/AIDS, and testing and counseling are provided on site.
CVAP encourages our volunteers, and our community at large, to contribute to community-building in Northern Uganda. We provide support to development initiatives piloted by our returning volunteers. Currently, the Concordia Volunteers At Home projects address a wide variety of issues in concert with community partners.
The Mercy Project was envisioned as a way to support healthcare for disadvantaged communities. They provide financial support, along with organizational plans, for clinical check-ups, medication, treatment, and emergency health coverage. Within their partnering communities a large focus is given to children and young people so that they may have the opportunity to strive in good health. They also wish to provide a platform for local public health leaders to co-ordinate sustainable health education programs and workshops within their own communities.
