An easy and effective way to increase awareness and garner public support for the crises in Northern Uganda is to host a screening of a documentary which properly outlines the crises and brings it to light. Two very effective and informative documentaries CVAP recommends are Uganda Rising and War Dance. Uganda Rising deals primarily with the history of the crises and will give information relevant up until 2006. War Dance deals with how the Acholi people of Northern Uganda are coping with the crises and how they are attempting to rebuild their community following the secession of hostilities signed in 2007.
In most cases these films can be purchased or rented at your local video store, or you can find them available for purchase online at www.ugandarising.com and www.wardancethemovie.com. If you are a Concordia university student and would like to view any of these films please feel free to contact us to arrange for a viewing in our office.
Please note, it is important prior to hosting a screening that you compile a list of organizations that your audience can contact in order to give support, or that you compile a list of actions that can be taken in order to improve on the quality of life of the people effected by the crises. These documentaries leave most viewers with a sense that they must do something. This energy and enthusiasm should be harnessed and directed in the right direction!
